Stuart R. VanBoening

May 2, 1955 — November 26, 2024

Stuart Ray VanBoening, 69, of Wallace, Nebraska, took his final flight home on November 26, 2024, at Bethany Home in Minden, surrounded by family after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Stuart was born on May 2, 1955, in Sutherland, Nebraska, to Dale F. and Dolores A. (Hastings) VanBoening. He grew up with a strong connection to the land and a passion for aviation. On Stuart's 16th birthday, he soloed. On his 17th birthday, he achieved his private pilot license going on to obtain instrument and commercial ratings. After earning a degree from Kearney State College, Stuart pursued a career as a spray pilot, dedicating years to aerial application and agriculture. In 2004, following his father's passing, Stuart and his brother Steve continued the family legacy of farming.

On January 23, 1982, Stuart married Lea Rumery at Wallace Methodist Church. Stuart and Lea were blessed with three daughters: Jennifer, Joni, and Sandy, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

Stuart was a man of many talents, known for his hard work, resilience, and integrity. A patient and gentle spirit, his laugh was infectious, and his smile could light up any room. For over 50 years, Stuart was a skilled pilot. Stuart and his wife owned and operated Wallace Aviation, an aerial application business. They also owned Wallace Air Repair, an aviation shop that kept planes in the air. His passion for flying extended beyond his career, as he mentored young pilots and inspired others with his courage and dedication.

Civically oriented and deeply connected to his community, Stuart served on the Wallace Fire Department for 24 years, earning the respect of his fellow firefighters. He also held positions on the town board, was a member of NATA, NAAA, and Flying Farmers. Stuart was awarded a national safety award from NAAA and the Nebraska Airman of the Year from NATA. He proudly earned the distinction of Eagle Scout as a young man. Stuart was always willing to lend a hand and was known for his calm demeanor, even in challenging situations.

Family was Stuart's greatest treasure. He adored his grandchildren-Jacob, Austin, Andrew, Emma, Derik, Joey, Brinley, Hudson, and Harper May-and cherished every moment spent with them. Whether flying with Grandpa or enjoying time on the family farm, they knew they were the light of his life.

Stuart is survived by his wife, Lea, of Wallace; his mother, Dolores, of North Platte; his daughters and their spouses, Jennifer ("Glenn") Ledbetter of Wallace, Joni (Michael) Kennicutt of Wallace, and Sandy (Quinton) Pohl of Minden; his nine grandchildren; his brother, Steve (Betty) VanBoening of North Platte; sister-in-law Shelly (Larry) Leigh of Longmont, CO; and his beloved canine companion, Pepper. Stuart is also survived by nieces, a nephew, and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Dale; his Aunt Wanda; his Uncle Wayne; his parents-in-law, Ken and Donna, and his brother-in-law, Ken.
