Matthew Eugene Murfield

MATTHEW EUGENE MURFIELD, 70, of Grant, former longtime Sioux City, IA, resident, passed away at his home on February 8, 2026, at Grant, NE.

Matthew was born June 16, 1955, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Lake and Dorothy (Castello) Murfield. He attended school in Sioux City and graduated from Bishop Heelan Catholic High School.

On May 27, 1977, Matt married his high school sweetheart, Kathleen J. Engel in Sioux City. They were blessed with four children: Melody, Megan, Matthew, and Miranda. The family made their home in Sioux City, where Matt worked in construction for several decades. He was an experienced finish carpenter and worked on numerous projects throughout Sioux City, including the Orpheum Theatre. In Matt's earlier life he enjoyed hosting golf brunches at his house, being a completive pool leaguer, playing softball, and spending time on his boat.

After moving to Grant in November of 2021, Matt made his home in a Quonset house on his daughter's property. He enjoyed working on his golf cart, had it up running again, and he was very proud of that. He enjoyed watching the boys farm and even got to enjoy a few times in the tractors. He had a fondness for animals, especially his dog Cochise.

Matt had a distinct ornery streak that kept people on their toes and kept the party going. He was a proud and patriotic man. After his wife Kathy passed away in 2016, those close to him knew his heart was never quite the same. It is comforting to know that he is reunited with his beloved, Kathy.

In addition to his wife, Matt was also preceded in death by his Mother and Father, two sisters, Pauline Blassel and Kathy Williams; and brother-in-law's Rodney Woods, Frank Blassel, Gordy Bishop.

Survivors include his children, Melody (David) Kempf of Grant, NE, Megan Murfield of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Matthew Murfield of Sioux City, Iowa, and Miranda (Montana) Childress of Council Bluffs, Iowa; grandchildren, Lillian (Joe) Minar, Ashley Kempf (Trevin Tuma), Hannah Kempf, Kaysi Murfield, Matthew Murfield, and Evelyn Murfield; one great-grandson, Boston Lee; brother, Mike (Roxie) Murfield of Sioux City; sister, Patty Woods of Sioux City; sister, Teresa Fitzgibbons of Sioux City; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at the Sioux City Country Club from 1:00 to 4:00. Then join the family as they continue to celebrate Matthew at his favorite place.
