Lloyd E. Lehmkuhl

September 10, 1936 — January 29, 2017

Lloyd E. Lehmkuhl, 80 of Wallace, NE, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017 at his home in Wallace.

Lloyd was born September 10, 1936 in Wellfleet, NE to Arthur and Helen (Knajdl) Lehmkuhl. Lloyd graduated from Wallace High School with the class of 1954. On his 18th birthday, Lloyd entered the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge, Lloyd returned to Wallace, and on June 4, 1959 married Edyth Larson. The couple made their home in Wallace briefly before moving to North Platte, where Lloyd worked as a mechanic for the Nebraska Department of Roads. Four years later they returned to Wallace where Lloyd continued his career with the Department of Roads in the maintenance department. In 2001, Lloyd retired after 41 years of service.

In retirement, Lloyd enjoyed helping area farmers during harvest time. He particularly enjoyed running a combine. He was an avid, at times boisterous, fan of Wallace Wildcat Athletics. He enjoyed woodworking and collecting metal toys, such as tractors and trucks. Lloyd was never afraid to harass his family and friends in good fun. He tended to hold strong opinions, and on occasion, took great joy in making them known. Lloyd's raucous demeanor provided great amusement to his family over the years. He didn't take himself too seriously, and encouraged his children and family to see life from a different perspective, especially during his last 6 months. Lloyd served as an inspiration to his loved ones in the way that he smiled throughout hardship and still managed to find laughter in the midst of the terrible illness that is cancer. Lloyd's example and zest for life will be remembered fondly by his family and close friends.

Lloyd was a longtime member of the Wallace Volunteer Fire and Rescue, VFW and American Legion Post #213, where he'd served as Commander.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Lehmkuhl and sister, Barbara Hengen.

Survivors include his wife, Edyth of Wallace; 3 daughters, Linda (Steven) Gier of Wallace, Johanna (Edward) Braun of Norcatur, KS; Katherine (Manuel) Pacheco of Wallace; 8 granddaughters, Rochelle Kirkwood, Amber Doty, Amanda Tinklin, Sylvia Holmes, Alicia Rizzello, Jessica Holmes, Ashley Whitson, Arlana Whitson; 5 great grandchildren, Autumn, Blake, Adalyn, Orion and Adlee; 9 step grandchildren; 13 step great grandchildren; sister, Bernice Ehlers of Delavan, IL; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
