David Hilferty

David Hilferty, 76, of Madrid, passed away Sunday, September 5, 2021, at the Perkins County Hospital in Grant.

David was born October 8, 1944, at Grant, Nebraska, to Charles and Helen (Andersen) Hilferty. He graduated from Madrid High School with the class of 1963, where he was a stand-out athlete. David graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a degree in history.

David taught and coached for five years at Grant Junior High School; as well as farmed south of Madrid. Many of the students he impacted affectionately referred to him as "Coach," even into adulthood. On September 17, 1982, David married Lynda Midcap. The couple made their home in Grant, moving to the farm in 2012.

David was a member of the Nebraska Wheat Growers Association and the Ethanol Board. David loved a good game of cards and traveling whenever he got the chance.

David was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Kiplyn Hopkins; twin sister, Dona Vasa; Brothers-in-law, Keith Nelson, Jack Glunz, and Gary Day; sister-in-law, Betty Jo Hilferty.

Survivors include his wife, Lynda of Madrid; children, Kellie Kava of North Platte and her daughter, Brittany; Traci (Sam) Lee of Madrid and their children, Brady, Hudson, and Thomas; Kristi Hopkins of Fort Collins, CO, and her children, Kim and Brock; Travis Hopkins of Phoenix, AZ and his children Preston, Lily, and Peyton.

Survivors also include his siblings, Marian and Bill Robertson of Elsie, Gary Hilferty of Grant, Gail Nelson of Grant, Sharon Day of Madrid, Lyle and Wyvonne Hilferty of Limon, CO; brother-in-law, Stan Vasa of Lincoln; along with many other relatives and friends.

A memorial is being established with the intent to fund a UNL Agriculture Related Scholarship for Perkins County graduates. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com, where the service will be streamed live.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at 11 AM at the Grant United Methodist Church. Private inurnment will be in the Madrid Cemetery.
