Hazel Gimeson

Hazel Gimeson, 84, of Grant, NE, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2021, at the Perkins County Hospital in Grant.

Hazel was born May 1, 1937 at Almena Kansas, the third of four children to Elisa F. and Mayme A. (Picraux) Courtain. When Hazel was five, the family moved to Oxford, NE and she lost her mother at age 8, she lost her father at the age 15. Hazel and her sister Beulah spent some time in the Holdrege orphanage and she received her education at Oxford, NE.

On July 11, 1954, Hazel married Merle W. Gimeson at Oxford, NE. Their union was blessed with five children, Richard, Joyce, Henry, (Merle) Dewayne, and Christopher. Hazel and Merle resided in Yuma, CO when they celebrated the birth of their first son, the family lived in Orleans, NE when they welcomed their daughter. In 1961 the family moved to Grant, Merle was employed by Jones Construction and Hazel was a working mother. Summers were spent traveling with the whole family to many states including Kansas, Illinois, South Dakota, and Nebraska.

Hazel worked at many jobs, occasionally two at time as waitress, housekeeping and a wonderful cook at the Hospital, Crescent Cafe and many years at Perkins County High School.

Hazel was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church at Grant and served on the board and was always available to help with Church projects and gatherings and enjoyed the fellowship of pot lucks. Hazel created many beautiful quilts for the Fall Festival raffle at church.

Hazel was an excellent seamstress and quilter. She has created many beautiful works of art cherished by her children. Hazel welcomed many friends with open arms and touched many lives with her kindness and love of life and family.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Fred and Herb Courtain.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Merle of Grant; children, Richard (Cherie) Gimeson, of Norton, KS; Joyce Rahn of Ogallala; Henry (Brenda) Gimeson of Windsor, CO; (Merle) Dewayne (Donna) Gimeson of Chadron, NE; Christopher Gimeson of Gothenburg; Sister Beulah (Don) Vahle of Long Island, KS; Grandchildren Joshua, Riley, Zachary, Craig Allan, Vern Dale, Wade, Devon, Logan, August, Victoria and a very special adopted grandchild Samantha. Great-Grandchildren Ravi, Rylee, Callie, Camden, Kennady, and Jake; and many friends and extended family.

Memorial Services will be Monday, July 19, 2021, at 10:00 am at the First Congregation Church in Grant, with Denise Johnson officiating. Inurnment will be in the Grant Fairview Cemetery.
