George Reitz was born on January 19, 1935 in Hitchcock County, Nebraska. He was the only child born to Elbert and Celia Cordwell Reitz. He grew up in the Max area and later moved to the Grant community with his grandmother. After attending rural school, he attended high school at the Curtis Agriculture School and in Grant, graduating from Perkins County High School in 1953.
George was married to Lydian Keller in 1953. One son, Ron, was born to this union. The marriage later ended in divorce. George joined the United States Army in 1953 and served in Okinawa until his honorable discharge in 1955.
George was married to Carol Ann Case on October 30, 1956 at Green River Wyoming. Three children were born to this union. They lived in Reliance Wyoming where George worked for the railroad and later the coal and trona mines in that area. They moved to their farm acreage southwest of Grant in 1981. George and Carol raised livestock on the farm. George suffered an apparent heart attack Sunday afternoon, August 16, 2009 at his home and was transferred to the Perkins County Community Hospital where he died. He had reached the age of 74.
George is survived by his wife, Carol; 3 sons- Ron and his wife Edna Clapp of McGrew Nebraska, Cecil Reitz of Grant, and Tim and his wife Cindie Reitz of Omaha; 1 daughter- Mary Ellen and her husband Mike Rotness of Alliance; 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson; other relatives and friends.
His body was cremated. Memorial services will be held on Friday, August 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Grant New Life Fellowship Church with Pastor Vince Carrig, officiating. Cremains will be buried in the Grant Cemetery with a flag presentation by the Perkins County Veterans. A memorial has been established.
