Fred Evans was born on June 4, 1920 in Lincoln Nebraska. He was the third of four sons born to Robert Van and Eloise Ann Harper Evans. The family moved to Dubuque Iowa when Fred was a young boy and at the age of seven, they moved to Wallace. Fred attended elementary school in Wallace but attended high school in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High School. The summers were spent in Wallace where he helped his father.

Fred was married to Jean Ferris in Lincoln on November 4, 1945. Two sons - Ted and John were born to this union. They moved to Wallace in 1947 where Fred became engaged in ranching. While his sons were growing up, Fred served as the Cub Scout Master for 7 years. In 1958, Fred became a volunteer weather observer in Wallace for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association until he retired this position in 1987.

He also became quite skilled working with wrought iron. In addition to special orders, he designed the Celtic Cross atop St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the iron symbols inside the church. He also created an Indian sculpture that was place in the Wallace park commemorating the Bi-Centennial in 1976.

Fred continued to maintain his home on the northeast edge of Wallace after Jean died in 1996 until earlier this fall when he moved to Linden Court in North Platte. He had been transferred to the Great Plains Regional Medical Center where he died early Friday morning, October 16, 2009. He had reached the age of 89.

In addition to his wife, Fred was preceded in death by one son - John; and two brothers - Bob and Stewart. He is survived by one son - Ted and his wife Kris of Calhoun Georgia and Wallace; two grandchildren- Darrin (Jenniffer) Evans and Laura (Larry) Kidd and their two children; one brother, Don of Lincoln and sister-in-law, Dee Evans.

His body was cremated. Graveside inurnment services will be held on Wednesday November 4 at 1:30 p.m. (CT) at the Wallace Morningview Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Wallace Alumni Scholarship Association.
