Clifford McGregor was born on the family farm in Hayes County Nebraska on April 28, 1935. He was the oldest of two sons born to Earl and Joyce Gardner McGregor. Cliff grew up on the family farm and attended country school. He spent his freshman year at Grainton and then transferred to Hayes Center High School where he graduated in 1953. Clifford loved the farm life and learned from an early age how to repair things. He carried that talent into his adult years and to his family and friends he was known as “Mr. Fix-it.”
Cliff joined the United States Army in August of 1957. He served his basic training at Ft. Carson Colorado, later being transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri and Ft. Ord California. During this period he returned to Nebraska and was married to Evelyn Malone in Palisade on June 1, 1958. They returned to Ft. Ord California until his discharge in May of 1959. (He was part of the Army Reserves until 1963.)
Cliff and Evelyn returned to Hayes County where he became active in the family farm. In addition to his farming, Cliff worked as a machinist for Earnie Shaw, applied farm chemicals with Warren Kinney and drove a school bus for Hayes Center Schools. Cliff and Evelyn lived in Yakima Washington from 1965 until 1967 where he worked as a machinist for Dakota Aircraft. They returned to their farm in 1967 where they spent the rest of their married life. Cliff had been diagnosed with a lung malignancy in 2005 but was able to remain at home. He was admitted to the Ogallala Community Hospital late Wednesday night and died early Thursday morning, October 15, 2009. He had reached the age of 74.
Clifford was a wonderful support for his family and friends. He served on the Wauneta Co-op Board for several years and had an active interest in the farm until his death. Cliff had accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in 1975 and Cliff and Evelyn had been very active with the Grainton Village Church the past few years.
